FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 12-31-2005

Olena Prytula and Georgiy Gongadze launched Ukrayinska Pravda in April 2000 to expose Ukrainian political corruption that occured after independence. In November 2000, Gongadze's beheaded body was found in a forest. Prytula courageously continued publication, pushing democracy and helping create the Orange Revolution which was financially subsidized by the USA. Unsurprisingly, corruption in Ukrainian government continues as it does in the USA. Olena Prytula circulated a free press petition which was signed by 700+ journalists. She published the "Melnichenko tapes" which implied a plot to kill Gongadze. In 2005 Prytula was honored by the U.S. National Press Club with an award for courageous and independent reporting. Prytula and other reporters continue to challenge those in power. Most people in Ukraine know all too well how dangerous it was to write critical articles about Ukrainian authorities. For making mighty contributions to the democratization of Ukraine and for continuing to press for the completion of a real democracy in Ukraine, Olena Prytula has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
