FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 12-10-2005

Better

Grigory Pasko is a Russian environmental whistleblower who made the world aware of Russian radioactive dumping in the ocean. He now edits and writes for the magazine Environment and Rights. He is also a poet and worked for Japanese media. In 1997 he was arrested for reporting that Russia dumped nuclear waste into the sea and for the possession of state secrets. He was aquitted of ten charges of treason but charged with abusing his military office and sentenced, but an amnesty removed the sentence. He was later convicted and sentenced on appeal by the prosecution for one charge of treason and given four years in prison. Amnesty International, Bellona, International Pen and others questioned the legitimacy of the proceedings. They campaigned for his release. Pasko was released January 2003 when a civilian court over-ruled the military courts. Pasko experienced persecution and years in a hard labor camp for blowing the whistle on illegal and environmentally-damaging military crimes, primarily polluting the Sea of Japan with radioactive waste. For stopping heinous military Russian crimes and for helping to protect the environment, Grigory Pasco has been named Futuresaver of the Week. Click the links below for more information. Now we need someone to stop heinous military USA crimes!
