Hassan Juma'a Awad is president of the General Union of Oil Workers in Iraq. He dealt with the administration installed by the occupation forces to help protect the oil industry and to establish union legitimacy. His union represents 23,000+ workers. The occupation tried to stop him and other union activists from unionizing the oil industry. The occupiers set the pay scale extremely low so the workers went on strike and got their pay raised to almost 3 times what the occupiers had set. They also got the American company KBR to totally withdraw their personell from the oil installations. Almost all of the oil workers want the occupation to end immediately with immediate withdrawal of all forces for they know that once the US/UK are gone the primary purpose of the insurgency will vanish. The union and workers oppose the privatization of industry for they want Iraqis to control Iraqi resources not corporatized outside warmongers and thieves. For working as hard as he can to help create a real democracy for all of the Iraqi people, Hassan Juma'a Awad has been named Futuresaver of the Week. Click the links below for more information.
