Khaleda Zia is the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has helped bring much progress to all of the people of Bangladesh. Her husband, President Ziar Rahman was assassinated in 1981 which propelled her to do whatever she could to bring democracy to Bangladesh. Nine years of mass movement brought success. She has brought unprecedented power to the women of Bangladesh with free education for girls, stipends and food for education. She alleviated poverty by accelerating economic production and growth and by stimulating agriculture. When she was out of office she led the biggest demonstration in Bangladesh history and was harassed and imprisoned. After a lapse of 16 years Bangladesh had its parliamentary system of government restored. She was elected Prime Minister three times. Her government is one of moderation, accommodation, tolerance and liberalism building toward a society of communal harmony. Her foreign policy is good neighborly relations, regional cooperation, adherence to the UN charter and promoting world peace. For providing the best governance Bangladesh has ever had, Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has been named Futuresaver of the Week. Click the links below for more information.
