Chief Judge Mary Schroeder of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals was appointed by President Carter. She is the first woman chief judge of the USA's largest judicial circuit. As a lawyer in Arizona, she chaired the committee that drafted and secured passage of Arizona's first civil rights law. She realizes that the role of women is to humanize the courts. She is the primary force in helping to set the direction of Ninth Circuit law. She has a record as a prolific legal writer and scholar. When she served on the Arizona Court of Appeals she was the youngest woman appellate judge in the USA. She has been president of the National Association of Women Judges and is a member of the Council of the American Law Institute. She is opposed to the current effort to split the 9th circuit. For being the brightest and most compassionate voice in the effort to improve the level of justice and compassion in USA law and courts, Chief Judge Mary Schroeder has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
