Leyla Zana is the former member of parliament (the first Kurdish woman) in Turkey who has been a political prisoner in a Turkish jail for nine years. This is the way Turkey treats Kurdish people in Turkey if the speak up for Kurdish human rights. Leyla Zana is also a journalist and writer. She has been honored by being awarded many international peace and human rights prizes including the 1995 Saharov but cannot accept them in prison. She has been extremely active in promoting peace, real democracy and human rights for all. She became a roll model for improved conditions for women in Turkish society. For devoting her whole adult life to achieving real democracy, full human rights and full peace for all the women, children and men of Turkey, Leyla Zana has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
