FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 8-23-2003

Better

George Akerlof is the Koshland Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley who is a 200l Nobel Laureate in Economics. No one knows better than Akerlof how devastating the Bush Administration's tax cuts and war plans are to the current USA economy and to its future economy. He is a genius at tying together the harsh effects of bad economic policy on all the major fields of human activity. He is also extremely well liked by students and colleagues. He has won numerous awards in addition to the Nobel. He knows that economic models must incorporate features from a broad range of human activity in order to be meaningful and accurate. He knows that the Bush tax cuts will create great economic and human harm in the months and years ahead unless reversed or greatly ameliorated. He and more than 450 other USA economists signed a petition deploring the Bush tax cuts. For doing his best to increase the quality of economics and government policy in the USA (and thus to increase the sustainability of human activity in the USA and the world), George Akerlof has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
