FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 8-2-2003

Vera Mischenko is the Russian attorney who co-founded Russia's first public interest law organization (Ecojuris) and who won a 2000 Goldman Environmental Prize. She is working to protect Russia's environment using legal tools. She defended citizen's environmental and health rights by bringing the first successful lawsuit against anti-environmental government policies and practices. She helped to protect native forests; halt bad development projects and stood up to the excesses of multinational oil corporations. She is the creator of the Russian Network of Environmental Lawyers, a group of attorneys who do pro bono environmental work and she helped draft environmental legislation for the Russian Duma. For working hard to save the environment of Russia and for being successful in the Russian supreme court and elsewhere, Vera Mischenko has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
