FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 5-10-2003

Fatima Jibrell is the executive director of Horn of Africa Relief and Development Organization (Horn Relief). She has faced war, drought and harassment working to organize women and protect natural resources in Somalia. She secured an enforced ban on the export of charcoal which was devastating old growth acacia trees. Jibrell received a 2002 Goldman Environmental Prize for leadership in creating an environmental movement to protect natural resources in Somalia. She also coordinates the Resources Management Somali Network (RMSN) which includes environmental groups throughout the Horn of Africa. She helped create the Women's Coalition for Peace in Somalia. She strives to reduce clan conflicts. She teaches community groups practical ways to reduce water runoff, nourish vegetation and reduce desertification. She also speaks out against the degradation of the marine environment, is active in the Buran Rural Institute (BRI) and helps in education. For doing her best to implement a better environment, better resources, peace, welfare and sustainability for the women, men, children and other lifeforms in the Horn of Africa, Fatima Jibrell has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
