FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 3-29-2003

Better

Dolores Huerta is co-founder and First Vice President Emeritus of the United Farm Workers of America. She has also played a major role in the American civil rights movement. After college she became a grammar school teacher. She left teaching because so many children were in poverty that she wanted to help make their basic lives better. She helped found the Stockton chapter of the Community Service Organization. She organized and founded the Agricultural Workers Association. She became a lobbyist in Sacramento and in Washington DC for better conditions for Spanish-speaking immigrants. She and Cesar Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association which later became the United Farm Workers. She was instrumental in the success of the Delano Grape Strike and other actions and infrastructures which resulted in unionizing the California table grape industry. Many more successes followed. She has received many well-deserved awards. For helping farm workers and other groups to achieve justice and improve their civil rights, Dolores Huerta has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
