FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 12-28-2002

Better

Dr. Harold E. Varmus is a Nobel laureate in medicine and is president of the Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center. He was previously Director of the National Institutes of Health. He is also chairman of the nonprofit internet publisher which will put peer-reviewed journals on biology and medicine online and in the public domain. The new publisher is called Public Library of Science which grew out of the friction between scientists and the established scientific journal publishers. This brilliant idea and reality will accelerate the creation and dissemination of scientific papers to all of us who care to read them and to write explanations of them. Science for all of the people will be the eventual result for "The written record is the lifeblood of science." as Dr. Varmus says. Soon anyone and everyone will be able to read this written record and its popular spinoffs without restriction. Knowledge is indeed powerful and this new publishing mode will increase power to the people. For flowing power to real science and to real people, Dr. Harold E. Varmus has been named Futuresaver of the Week. Click the links below for more information.
