Senator Robert C. Byrd is the Senior Senator from West Virginia and the US Senate's president pro tem. He has recently vigorously opposed giving Bush a blank check for unilateral war against Iraq. He knows that the Bush rush to bomb/invade Iraq is mostly about winning the November 5 election for Republicans and about controlling/profiting from Iraq's huge oil reserves. Senator Byrd has a progressive record on education, health care, transportation, employment, safety, clean energy, war and peace, the Constitution and on many other issues. Senator Byrd is the Chairman of the powerful Senate Committee on Appropriations.
