FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 9-21-2002

Ernesto Cortes got a genius grant from the McArthur Foundation in 1984, has received other fellowships and is now the lead organizer for the Industrial Areas Foundation. The IAF is Chicago-based and is especially active in New York, Texas, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nebraska, Maryland, Tennesee and the United Kingdom: it's one of the most effective community organizing groups in the US. Their rallies are packed with thousands of community activists who decide their own agenda. They help optimize streets, water, sewage, living wages, public health, economic development, schools, politics, libraries, etc. It is a very effective good-leadership-generating operation because Ernesto Cortes and others lead by example, not by dictation.
