Damon J. Keith is the Jimmy Carter-appointed judge who wrote the opinion for a unanimous three-judge Court of Appeals in support of a suit against the Justice Department by four Michigan newspapers and Rep. John Conyers, Jr. "Democracies die behind closed doors," Judge Keith said, in part. The suit was about the Justice Department denying the press access to an immigration deportation hearing allegedly relevant to terrorism. It is part of the Justice Department's unnecessarily restricting freedom of the press and thus hiding behind national security to strip the American people of their freedoms. The other two judges, who are equally meritorious, were appointed by Bill Clinton. Judge Keith: "A government operating in the shadow of secrecy stands in complete opposition to the society envisioned by the framers of our Constitution." For helping to protect America from those zealots in government who would unnecessarily restrict Constitutional Freedom, Judge Damon J. Keith has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
