FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 8-31-2002

Radhika Coomaraswami is the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women who began her term in 1994. She is from Sri Lanka and is a lawyer. She has traveled to Afghanistan and to many other nations to investigate violence against women and to suggest ways of successfully reducing it and other restrictions of women's rights. She knows that much abuse against women is built into the structure of various cultures. She also knows that much abuse is visited on minority women in some societies. She knows that support systems for victims are sometimes abscent. For investigating numerous cases of human rights abuses against women in numerous societies and for having clear humanitarian ideas about how to deal with those abuses, Radhika Coomaraswami has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
