Irene Khan became Amnesty International Secretary General August 2001. She has been very active in her new role, having visited refugee camps at the Pakistani/Afghan border, speaking to the UN press corps, visiting Israel and Palestine about their crisis situation, Upgrading Amnesty's commitment to women's rights, dealing with curtailed freedoms since 9/11, developing positive global values, protecting rights, leading a mission to Australia to investigate their remote detention centers, etc. Irene Khan was raised in Dhaka, Bangladesh at the height of the civil war in the 70's and specialized in international law at Harvard. She headed the UN High Commission on Refugees and became the first woman, the first Asian and the first Muslim to lead Amnesty International. For doing an excellent job at two of the world's finest humanitarian organizations (United Nations and Amnesty International), Irene Khan has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
