Arundhati Roy wrote The God of Small Things: original, playful, poetic and wise fiction which sold over 6 million copies. She is a progressive critic of World Bank-style development and globalization injustices. She struggled to halt the Sardar Sarovar dam and wrote Power Politics which describes that struggle. She opposed the US bombing of Afghanistan in numerous op-ed pages. She lives in New Delhi, India and is an effective progressive activist. She also wrote The Cost of Living which is two essays. She has been imprisoned and fined by the government of India which is intolerant of free speech and honest living. She is the first Indian woman to receive the Booker Prize in London. She has written four political books: The Threat of Nuclear Weapons, The Promotion of Equal Rights, The Narmala Dam Project and The War on Terrorism. Her most creative essay series title is The Great Indian Rape Trick. For exposing and protesting many of the moral, corporate, legal, class, fundamentalist, environmental and political bigotries in India and the rest of the world, Arundhati Roy has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
