Massomeh Ebtekar is Vice President and Head of the Environmental Protection Agency, Islamic Republic of Iran. She is a noted Iranian feminist, environmental activist and pro-democracy activist. She became well-known in the West as the English-language spokesperson for the successful student takeover of the US Embassy in Iran in 1979. She knows better than almost anyone else in the world how very wrong the Bush antidemocratic jihad against the peoples and environments of Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Afghanistan and others is. She is the highesst ranking female official in a muslim country. She also became an immunologist, got married, had children, launched an intellectual journal on women's issues and became a journalist. Massomeh Ebtekar and the other women of Iran are making great improvements in their status and influence, especially in environmental matters. If true democracy comes to Iran and the US it will be because both women and men have assumed their fair share of responsibility. For helping to bring democracy, justice and environmental survival to Iran, the Middle East and the world, Massomeh Ebtekar has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
