FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 3-2-2002

Karen Armstrong has written numerous books about the interactions of the Christian, Jewish and Muslim religions and about how these histories are relevant to today's political, economic and military world. Particularly relevant to today's post 911 world is her book Islam: A Brief History. She knows better than anyone else that we cannot leave the fight against terrorism solely to our politicians or to our armies and that we ordinary citizens must find out more about the rest of the world. We must understand why many Muslims and others throughout the world do not grieve the US 911 losses. We must learn more about non-Christian and non-Jewish religions and more about how the US Government's foreign policies have gone astray. If we are to correct the flaws of today we must learn exactly what those flaws are and move away from violent nationalism and violent fundamentalism toward a more democratic and more peaceful world. For approaching a deep understanding of our flawed realities and for spreading that understanding throughout the world, Karen Armstrong has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
