FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 5-19-2001

Better

Laurie Garrett's two big books (The Coming Plague, 94 and Betrayal of Trust: ... , 00) make it clear that most of the world's politicians and CEOs are more interested in saving a few rich lives than in saving billions of poor lives. So public health has gone down the tubes and drains. And plagues are coming on stronger and stronger. Globalization without adequate public health/nutrition puts us all at risk. Garrett's original Ebola coverage won her a Pulitzer Prize. She has also won a Peabody, two Polks and numerous other prizes/awards. There are enough deadly viruses in biofreezers to kill us all. International activism pointed in the right direction could save us but the wrong direction seems epidemic in our societies. Clearly, the power to save lives has been thoroughly stifled by corporate greed, militarism and bureaucratic bungling. For giving us many clues in Newsday, in her books and in other sources about the inadequacies of support for out sickness fighters, Laurie Garrett has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
