Wilma Mankiller was the first woman in modern history to
lead a major Native American tribe. She experienced first hand
forced removal of Cherokees. She started and completed many
community projects for her people. In San Francisco she learned
about the women's movement and organizing. She taught ways out of
poverty. She brought improved health care, educaction, utilities
management and better tribal government. She realized that her
mission in life was to serve her people. She was active in civil
rights and antiwar issues. She experienced many severe health
problems. She helped reunite the Cherokee Nation. She was awarded
the Presidential Medal of Freedom and received many other awards
and honors. For serving her people and all of us with great
courage, distinction and effectiveness, Wilma Mankiller has been
