Amy Dean is head of the South Bay Labor Council (Silicon
Valley Area) and is a national strategist for the AFL-CIO's drive
to unionize the high tech workers of the New Economy and their
support personnel. She has a really tough row to hoe but is doing
a superb job of it. She is the youngest woman ever elected to
head a regional labor council, coordinates the work of 110 local
unions in Silicon Valley and directs a national committee of
labor leaders seeking to make trade unions more relevant in
today's global economy. Dean and her colleagues were instrumental
in getting a living wage ordinance in the city of San Jose. Amy
Dean is the best of the new crop of progressive labor leaders in
the US. An excellent article about Amy Dean starts on page 74 of
the September + October 2000 issue of Mother Jones magazine. For
being at the cutting edge of the labor movement in the cutting
edge of the US economy, Amy Dean has been named Futuresaver of
the Week. Click the links below for more information.
