Annette Lu is the first female vice president in the
history of the Republic of China (Taiwan); she is the highest-
ranking female government official in the island's history. She
made a speech in 1979 saying that Taiwan should be independent
and that the fundmental rights of its people should be respected.
For this and other human rights activism she was sentenced to
confiscation of her personal property, 12 years in prison and an
additional 10 years deprivation of her civil rights after release.
Amnesty International declared her a prisoner of conscience and
helped secure her release which finally occurred in 1985. She
went back to her feminist and political activities. In 1992 she
ran for a regional office in Taiwan and won. She was elected Vice
President of Taiwan in March 2000 along with the new President
Chen. For giving top priority to the struggle for human rights in
Taiwan, for elevating the status of Chinese women in Taiwan and
for helping to end 50 years of virtual martial law in Taiwan,
Annette Lu has been named Futuresaver of the Week. Click the
