Barbara Allen Babcock is the Judge Crown Professor of Law
at the Stanford Law School of Stanford University. She won the
John Bingham Hurlbut Award for Excellence in Teaching and is a
recipient of the Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement
Award of the American Bar Association. She was the first woman
appointed to the law school faculty at Stanford, one of the
founders of Equal Rights Advocates, co-authored the landmark text
on sex discrimination law and wrote a book on Clara Shortridge
Foltz who was the first woman lawyer on the Pacific Coast and the
first person to conceive the idea of public defender. Barbara was
the first woman assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights
Division of the Department of Justice. For all of the above and
