Birute Galdikas is the anthropologist who is the world's
foremost authority on orangutans. She has done more to study
orangutans and to save them than anyone else. She knows that good
and compassionate human families and good and compassionate human
communities are key to successful human and environmental
survival. She has won the PETA Humanitarian Award, the Eddie
Bauer Hero of the Earth award, the Sierra Club Chico Mendes
Award, the United Nations Global 500 Award and many other awards
and honors. She received two university degrees, set up an
orangutan research station in Borneo, lived in the jungle for 23
years, founded Orangutan International support groups all over
the world, became a Professor at Simon Fraser University, wrote
articles for National Geographic and other publications, wrote
over fifty scientific articles, wrote twenty reviews and wrote
two books. For learning the intimate details of organgutans and
their rainforest and for letting us all know how desperately the
rainforest and the rest of earth's environments need to be saved,
Dr. Birute M.F. Galdikas has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
