Muhammad Yunis is the founder and managing director of the
Grameen Bank which began in Bangladesh. This revolutionary bank
manages loans to very poor people (mostly women) and has been
very successful in helping them live better lives through micro-entrepreneurship.
The repayment rate is between 96 and 100 percent. The Grameen
Bank now has 40,000 village centers and 2.4 million borrowers.
Muhammad Yunis has served on many advisory committees for the
Bangladesh government, the United Nations and other bodies
concerned with poverty, women and health. He has received the
World Food Prize, the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Humanitarian
Award, the Man for Peace Award, numerous other distinctions and
six honorary degrees. He has a Ph.D. in economics from Vanderbilt
University. The Grameen model has been applied in 40 countries
with outstanding success. About 22 million poor people around the
world now have access to small loans. Muhammad believes that the
eradication of poverty starts with people being able to control
their own fates. For bringing hope and success to the seemingly
hopeless, Dr. Muhammad Yunis has been named Futuresaver of the
Week. Click the links below for more information.
