Congresswoman Maxine Waters of California's 35th district
has an 85% environmental score for 1993-1998, according to the
League of Conservation Voters. She is a former chair of the
Congressional Black Caucus, a member of the Progressive Caucus,
Chief Deputy Democratic Whip in the US House, a member of the
Committee on Banking and Financial Services, Ranking Member of
the Domestic and International Monetary Policy Subcommittee, a
member of banking subcommittees on General Oversight on
Investigations and on Housing and Community Opportunity and a
member of the Committee on the Judiciary and its Subcommittee on
the Constitution. In addition to her good environmental record,
she has an impressive progressive record on affirmative action,
community, women's issues, welfare, drugs, foreign policy, small
business, agriculture, workers, education, children, civil
rights, human rights, poverty, justice, equality, fairness,
safety, health care, technology and science, police brutality,
South Africans, plant closures, child abuse prevention, Youth
Fair Chance, fair lending, debt relief, Black Women's Forum,
Project Build, Community Build, Free South Africa Movement, Head
