The state of New Hampshire is the first state in the US to
have a female Governor, a female Senate President and a female
House Speaker all at the same time. Governor Jeanne Shaheen, a
Democrat, was elected New Hampshire's first female Governor in
1996. Representative Donna Sytek, a Republican, became the first
woman to lead the House a month later. Senator Beverly
Hollingworth, a Democrat, became Senate President in September
1999. Now that the glass ceiling in government has been
demolished in New Hampshire, it is time to smash the glass
ceiling in government, corporations and other venues in all of
the states of the US. For giving a whole new meaning to "America
the Beautiful" and for being a harbinger of the the better,
more decent, more real democracy to come, New Hampshire has been
