Nelson Mandela is the President of South Africa. He is the
guiding light for the process of changing the government of South
Africa from a repressive racist minority regime to a democratic
government for all of the people. He joined the African National
Congress (ANC) in 1942 and helped found the Youth League of the
ANC in 1944. He was elected to the National Executive Committee
of the ANC in 1950. He was elected National Volunteer-in-Chief of
the ANC Campaign for the Defiance of Unjust Laws in 1952 and at
the end of 1952 became deputy president of the ANC. He was
banned, arrested and imprisoned by the government. He was finally
released in 1990 and became President of the ANC. He received the
Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and became State President of South
Africa in 1994. For devoting his life to the cause of bringing
democracy to South Africa and for doing what needed to be done to
make democracy a reality in South Africa, Nelson Mandela has been
