FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 5-8-99

Better

Nelson Mandela is the President of South Africa. He is the guiding light for the process of changing the government of South Africa from a repressive racist minority regime to a democratic government for all of the people. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1942 and helped found the Youth League of the ANC in 1944. He was elected to the National Executive Committee of the ANC in 1950. He was elected National Volunteer-in-Chief of the ANC Campaign for the Defiance of Unjust Laws in 1952 and at the end of 1952 became deputy president of the ANC. He was banned, arrested and imprisoned by the government. He was finally released in 1990 and became President of the ANC. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and became State President of South Africa in 1994. For devoting his life to the cause of bringing democracy to South Africa and for doing what needed to be done to make democracy a reality in South Africa, Nelson Mandela has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
