Dr. Rita R. Colwell is Director of the National Science
Foundation, the federal agency that supports scientific research
with its $3.5 billion yearly budget. She is the first woman to
head the agency and has a history of being the best at what she
does. Her current agenda is to expand US funding for information
technology, science and math education, and interdisciplinary
enhancement of biodiversity, sustainability and ecosystem studies.
For knowing what the sciences and the biosphere most need and for
working tirelessly to help organize the effort to enhance
scientific progress and biological sustainability, Rita R.
