Bill and Melinda Gates recently gave $3.3 billion to their
two foundations, bringing the foundations' total assets to almost
$5.5 billion. In 1997, when Ted Turner pledged $1 billion to his
causes, I said "...Bill Gates and other multibillionaires:
are you going to follow this magnificent example of philanthropy
or what?..." Bill and Melinda did it and they make us proud
of them. Who is next? For putting a good deal of their money into
the future of people instead of just into the future of their
capital, Bill and Melinda Gates have been named Futuresaver of
