Rigoberta Menchu Tum won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for
her tireless efforts to bring democracy, peace and human rights
to the indigenous people of Guatemala and elsewhere. She was
raised in the Quiche branch of the Mayan culture in Guatemala.
Her mother, father and brother were all killed by the military;
she has been a political prisoner and she has been in exile. She
has worked on labor issues, social reform, women's rights,
Committee of the Peasant Union, large demonstrations, the 31st of
January Popular Front, resistance to oppression, the United
Representation of the Guatemalan Opposition and ethno-cultural
reconciliation. She is a self-educated natural leader of great
intelligence, compassion and charisma. She wrote I, Rigoberta
Menchu, An Indian Woman in Guatemala and other texts and poems.
She has worked with UNESCO and presides over the Indigenous
Initiative for Peace. The Rigoberta Menchu Tum Foundation is
doing great work in improving all aspects of Indigenous life. For
doing everything humanly possible to improve the lives and the
environments of the people of Guatemala and elsewhere, Rigoberta
Menchu Tum has been named Futuresaver of the Week. Click the
