Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her
tireless efforts to bring democracy, peace and human rights to
Burma. While Burma is still gripped by tyranny, many victories
have been won against the regime and the toppling of the regime
is inevitable through her efforts and through the efforts of
activists worldwide. Her father was assassinated in 1947. She was
educated in Burma, India and England. She joined the pro-democracy
movement in 1988. She addressed hundreds of rallies calling for
democratic government until detained for 6 years by the military
government. She was released in 1995. She is General Secretary of
the National League for Democracy in Burma. She has also won the
Rafto Human Rights Prize, the Sakharov Prize and many other
awards and honors. She has written and spoken extensively for her
cause. For pursuing peace, democracy and justice for her people
with great courage, energy, perseverance and intelligence, Aung
San Suu Kyi has been named Futuresaver of the Week. Click the
