Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland is Director-General of the World Health Organization. After a distinguished medical career, she was appointed Minister of Environment in Norway. She was the Prime Minister of Norway for more than ten years and led the Labour Party to election victory three times. She chaired the World Commission on Environment and Development and was instrumental in creating the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio. She became the first female Norwegian Prime Minister and the first female Director-General of WHO. She is well aware of all the broad-ranging components of human health and is focusing all her great abilities on the task of bringing improved health to the human community and to the entire biosphere of earth. For completely mastering political awareness, environmental awareness and medical awareness and for contributing mightily to the effort to create a sustainable and healthy world environment, Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
