Terri Swearingen is one of the world's outstanding
environmental activists. She received the 1997 Goldman Award, the
most significant award for grassroots environmental activism. She
led efforts to halt the building of the largest US toxic waste
incinerator (in East Liverpool, Ohio, near an elementary school).
The plant was eventually built but she has prevented the building
of other such incinerators in the US and continues her efforts to
have permits for the East Liverpool incinerator revoked. Terri
Swearingen is a great example of how a local person can have a
positive influence on the environment of her community and a
positive effect on the environment of other communities in our
world. For contributing magnificently to saving our environment,
for giving full credit to the many others who helped her in her
quest for environmental justice and for bringing the highest form
of wisdom to the solution of human problems, Terri Swearingen has
