They Shot for the Moon

Donald K. "Deke" Slayton

He was the last of the original 7 to fly.

Early NASA Logo

During these years NASA was not using the familiar logo we know today. Dad received letters from some of the astronauts on letterhead featuring the old style logo seen here.

One of those letters was a hand written note from Donald K. "Deke" Slayton. He was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat and taken off flight status. Slayton was assigned to serve as Coordinator of Astronaut Activities. Later, to the delight of the entire Astronaut corps, Slayton was reinstated to flight status and flew on the Apollo/Soyus mission in July 1975.
