They Shot for the Moon

The Photographer and his Subjects

Dad was one of the finest photographers I have ever had the pleasure to know. But of course this is a son talking and one must consider the source. I remember sitting on his knee in the darkroom of a photo studio in Parsons, Kansas, a small farming and railroad town in the southeast corner of the state. It was there that I first discovered the magic of photography. I was fascinated watching the images appear from nowhere in the darkened room.

Here you see dad, armed with his trusty 4X5 Speed Graphic photographing Neil Armstrong as he was preparing for his Gemini VIII mission, March 16, 1966. Armstrong who was also an X-15 pilot had the honor of being the first man to set foot on the surface of the moon at 10:56 P.M., July 20, 1969, during the mission of Apollo XI .
