"Moqui Marbles" are covered with a thin "skin" of spheres of iron silicate coated sand grains. This skin is knobby inside and out.
Inside they are filled with light to dark iron silicate coated sand grains that are attached to each other by black iron silicate strands. In some specimines, flat layers of dark silica coated sand indicates the boundary where two or more large spheres have become one, and from time to time, they contain complete smaller spheres.
