(White's Mill, Abingdon VA 1996)
Travis, Bob and Roo posing near the White's
Mill waterwheel. This wheel was ripped off its axle by Federal Cavalry
in Stoneman's Raid through southwestern Virginia. A thunderstorm,
combined with the mill's fire resistant poplar siding prevented the Unionists
from burning the structure down. The wheel was eventually repaired
and continued to power the mill's machinery.
(White's Mill, Abingdon VA 1996)
This mill was owned by the family of James White,
who served as a Lieutenant in Company K, before moving on to become the
Regimental Adjutant. White's family owned and operated the mill through
the 19th Century. It was staffed by two millers, several skilled
tradesman, and approximately 30 slaves. A small community grew around
the mill to accommodate the workers and provide services to customers.
This well preserved structure is a tangible link to the rich history of
southwestern Virginia.
