INTP

Topics covered in this document:

Introduction

In this arena, an INTP -- like every other Myers-Briggs type -- displays specific differences between the sexes.

Gender Differences

Gender issues are especially prominent for the INTP female. While all of this internal conceptualizing may be tolerated in a male -- no matter how misunderstood or ignored by others it might be -- society is less likely to tolerate the same characteristic in a female.

The absentminded professor stereotype is, unfortunately, an image more conventionally male than female. [My note: I am, happily, a male ... and thus, do not have to deal with this particular dilemma.]

For example, ask a male INTP what time it is, and when he expounds on the philosophical nuances and even the ultimate meaning of time itself, you might think it's a sign of trying to sound overly intelligent. If a female INTP answers the same way, on the other hand, she might be shunned into an embarrassing silence.

Love and Relationships

In relating to an INTP, male or female, expect it to be an intellectual challenge. The choice of words you speak, or the very thoughts you share, will be construed as an invitation for the INTP to expand upon, to clarify, to argue, or even to convince you to rethink the entire issue.

In conversations, an INTP is sure to be thinking about -- and rehearsing -- an erudite response ... one that is calculated to inspire everyone else to reevaluate the issue at hand, based on some new insight. Such discipline and rigor might bring growth and a new direction to a relationship ... but more likely, it will only bring contention.

Social deftness and poise generally take a back seat to an INTP's intellectual pursuits. As a result, when INTPs are absorbed in the act of questioning or thinking about something, they often appear hard to reach, or even, in some cases, downright rude to those of a different type.
