Psalm Tune Scholarship Award

3rd Annual Psalm Tune Scholarship Award

Spring 2002

Text: Psalm 130

from The Book of Psalms for Singing, Psalm 130A,

(1973; Pittsburgh, The Board of Education and Publication, Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America)

NOTES:
1. We frequently use this Psalm at the close of our celebration of the Lord’s Supper (Communion). Our attitude at this time is one of quiet peace in the thankful joy of a renewed experience of our salvation. This circumstance may be helpful to the composer.

2. Superscript numbers (e.g., 1) refer to the traditional verse numbers.

3. The four stanzas are separated by a space. These are the stanzas in tune A for Psalm 130 in our Book of Psalms for Singing. The major separation in the flow of the Psalm is between verses 4 & 5, which is also between the second and third stanza. Composers are invited to make any suitable separation of stanzas and repetition of music they may desire.

4. Portions of text in parentheses are repetitions at the end of each stanza for the tune of Psalm 130A. Composers are invited to use this repetition or not as they wish.

5. If you have any other questions, please contact Pastor Swartz (see application above for data).

1. LORD, from the depths to Thee I cried. 2. My Lord, give ear to me. O hear my voice and hearken to my supplicating plea, (my supplicating plea).

3. LORD, who shall stand if Thou, my Lord, shouldst mark iniquity? 4. But yet with Thee forgiveness is, that men may reverence Thee, (that men may reverence Thee).

5. I wait, my soul awaits the LORD; My hope is in His word. 6. More than the watchmen wait for morn my soul waits for my Lord, (my soul waits for my Lord).

7. O Israel hope in the LORD; The LORD saves graciously. 8. And He shall Israel redeem from all iniquity, (from all iniquity).
