- Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
I really felt proud inside, Mom, the way you said I would.
I didn't drink and drive, Mom, even though the others said I should.
I know I did the right thing, Mom, I know you are always right.
Now the party is finally ending, Mom, as everyone is driving out of sight
As I got into my car, Mom, I knew I'd get home in one piece.
Because of the way you raised me, so responsible and sweet.
I started to drive away, Mom, but as I pulled out into the road,
the other car didn't see me, Mom, and hit me like a load.
As I lay there on the pavement, Mom, I hear the policeman say
the other guy is drunk, Mom, and now I'm the one who will pay.
I'm lying here dying, Mom. I wish you'd get here soon.
How could this happen to me, Mom?
My life just burst like a balloon.
There is blood all around me, Mom, and most of it is mine.
I hear the medic say, Mom, I'll die in a short time.
I just wanted to tell you, Mom, I swear I didn't drink.
It was the others, Mom. The others didn't think.
He was probably at the same party as I.
The only difference is, he drank and I will die.
Why do people drink, Mom? It can ruin your whole life.
I'm feeling sharp pains now. Pains just like a knife.
The guy who hit me is walking, Mom, and I don't think it's fair.
I'm lying here dying and all he can do is stare.
Tell my brother not to cry, Mom. Tell Daddy to be brave.
And when I go to heaven, Mom, put "Daddy's Girl" on my grave.
Someone should have told him, Mom, not to drink and drive.
If only they had told him, Mom, I would still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter, Mom. I'm becoming very scared.
Please don't cry for me, Mom. When I needed you, you were always there.
I have one last question, Mom, before I say good bye.
I didn't drink and drive, so why am I the one to die?
Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act that each tomorrow
Find us farther than to-day.
In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!
Trust no Future, how’er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act - act in the living Present,
Heart within and God o’erhead!
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints in the Sands of time,
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother
Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us be up and doing
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing
Learn to labour and to wait.
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
- Edwin Louis Cole
When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world.
I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation.
When I found I couldn't change the nation, I began to focus on my town.
I couldn't change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family.
Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself,
and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself,
I could have made an impact on my family.
My family and I could have made an impact on our town.
Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world.

All men and women are born, to live, suffer and die; what distinguishes us one from
another is our dreams,
whether they be dreams about worldly or unworldly things, and
what we do to make them come about.
We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch,
the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing. We do not, most of us, choose to die;
nor do we choose the time and conditions of our death. But within this realm of
choicelessness, we do choose how we live.
- Joseph Epstein
There are two perfectly good men, one dead, and the other unborn.
- A Chinese Proverb
I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense,
reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.
- Galileo Galilei
Age is a matter of the mind; if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.
The trouble with being punctual is that people think you have nothing more important to do.
Coming together is a beginning;
Keeping together is progress;
Working together is success.
A road map tells you everything except how to refold it.
Evil is "live" spelled backwards.
He who laughs last has no sense of humour.
If you can tell the difference between good advice and bad advice, you don't need advice.
Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are good
is like expecting the bull not to charge because you are a vegetarian.

The room for improvement is the largest room in the world.
The difficulties of life are to make us better - not bitter!
Be life long or short, its completeness depends on what it is lived for.
The GOD who gave us teeth will also give us bread.
- A Czech Proverb

but if he gets arrested, he blames his abusive parents.
