The full fee will be refunded in the event of our having to cancel a Course.Colour Course - Conquer your colour fearsColour surrounds us and our initial response to a textile is often dictated by its colour. Of course, we have our own colour preferences and prejudices but why does the colour red sing out in one textile and the same red in another blend quietly into the background? How many of us have had the dispiriting experience of winding a warp of beautiful colours only to find that is has flattened or lost its vibrancy once the weft has been woven? The aim of this Course will be to enable the student to better determine colour choices through an increased understanding of colour theory and how colours relate to one another, especially in the unique interaction of warp and weft. Through a series of exercises on paper and on the loom, students will have the opportunity to put into practice various aspects of colour interaction in relation to weaving; creating a third colour through optical mixing; knocking colours back by the use of neutrals; discovering why colour value is so important and how to use a pure hue colour to create colour movement. Although we will be experimenting with colour in weaving the colour theory will be relevant to anyone using colour in textiles including knitters, spinners and embroiderers. Equipment to bring: Sketchbook, scissors, tape measure, ruler and pencil. Students are asked to bring a photo, picture or found object in which colour is an important element. . Dyeing CourseDyeing can be easy. Is there a colour that you want for a particular project but can’t find on the shelves? Now you will be able to create it. This course will give you the opportunity to become familiar with the use of Acid and Fibre Reactive dyes. By the end of the course you will be able to :-
Felt making A two day Course exploring the diversities of felt making, from basic
drawing and painting with the fleece, colour mixing and texture forming,
to 3D, jewellery, and clothing.
Loom Weaving I & II (Melanie Venes)The Course is split into two weekends and students must enrol for both weekends. It has been especially designed for beginners. It will deal with theoretical as well as practical aspects of weaving. Loom Weaving I & II (Charlotte Grierson) The Course is split into two weekends (four days). Students must enrol for both weekends.

The Course will cover block weaves, extended twills and other weaves for both cloth and rugs. Students are encouraged to bring samples of work. Please let us know, when booking, of specific areas of interest
Spinning The Course will be concerned with fleece sorting, carding, spindle
and wheel spinning in both woollen and worsted techniques, with fleece
and other fibres. Yarns will be plied and techniques for effect/novelty
yarns will be discussed.
TapestryWilliam has given both general tapestry weaving and specific design
for tapestry courses at the Studio; this Course will combine both. Beginners

low relief techniques. More experienced weavers will be able to explore
their source materials and discuss their planned projects. |
