Like prayer, Meditation can be experienced in several forms and seems to have a variety of meanings depending on whose belief system is defining the practice. These are but a few:
the art and practice of spending time in the spiritual exercise of thinking about or focusing on some religious theme which may or may not include physical positions to enhance the depth of practice...
quiet, contemplative self reflections on a religious subject as a spiritual exercise...
deep conscious focus on a subject of importance and value in an attempt to understand the subjects relevance in a persons life...
guided imagery and/or music which increases the journey into an altered state of consciousness, enhancing the depth of self reflection on a subject of importance ...
Meditaion can be practiced alone or in a group. It can be accompanied with physical exercise, positions, music, chanting, or mantras that enhance the depth of thought in the process of reflection. When practiced the focus becomes the intent, and as you move deeper into an altered state of consciousness a sense of liberation from the bonds of the physical world fall away. A mystical, magical journey into the experience of interconnectedness fills the space. In meditation, unlike prayer, the outcome is to expand awareness of ones understanding of the visible and invisible worlds around them. Answers per se, are not sought, process and understanding are the primary focus. Though the process may remain the same, the understanding of a subjects relevance may change as the person develops and experiences life. Meditation practiced in a group still remains self focused. The intent is to journey and discover meaning of a personal nature. It is a powerful and inspiring self practice. Like prayer, meditation can sooth the emotions, relieve stress and mental strain, heal the body, uplift the spirit, fill us with hope, love and peace and again the reason, though different, is quite simple -- we have focused our mind, our energy and our feelings on the journey of self discovery. The out come may be very similar as our energy has a focal point, our intent is clear and a miracle happens -- we hear with our hearts. Meditation without focus and intent is simply an exercise in hearing your conscious thinking which will reap us little self knowledge -- and may, in fact, cost us in the long run. Meditation is not an entreaty to a God without ... it is a journey to the God with-in. And remember -- it is your heart that experiences the journey -- set foot on the path and your journey begins. We have been told that meditation is "food for the soul". Quiet time, inner work time, helps us listen to the conversation of the spirit. Sometimes, for what appears to be no reason, feelings come to the surface of our physical bodies when we are still and listen with our hearts. This is normal, natural, beautiful and
inspiring. Let them be! Refrain from analyzing and assuming these are stored feelings from your childhood. Feelings are only what we label them, so label them a wellspring of inspirational spiritual joy! Hear them with your spirit not your physical ears. Feel them with your spirit not your human emotion. Rejoice in the sensation of feeling, of being, of knowing you are alive in the Universe. You may want to use a recorded meditation or you may want to record one in your own voice. Either way guided imagery can help lead you into a beautiful meditative state. It's easy to do
yourself, simply find the rhythm of the prayer and in a soft voice record the prayer over the top of your favorite chanting music, soft rhythmic music or new age meditation music. Begin your meditation time as a ceremony. With your intent focused, light a candle, close your eyes, breathe and let the words and music take you on a healing earth journey, a healing
body journey, a healing spiritual journey. Don't worry about your natural thinking process, it is normal for it to interrupt you. It's part of you. Just let it happen, let the thoughts move through your mind and simply refocus your
attention. Like everything else in this physical world it takes practice. The benefits are worth the practice. You are worth the practice.
