Focus for Today: Nouns (Kata Nama)
According to Tatabahasa Dewan, the official reference for schools, text book writers and examination board, all Malay words can be classified under four categories, namely nouns (Kata Nama), verbs (Kata Kerja), adjectives (Kata Adjektif) and function words (Kata Tugas). For today's lesson, we shall look at Kata Nama.
Kata Nama can be further divided into Kata Nama Am (Common Nouns) and Kata Nama Khas (Proper Nouns)
Kata Nama Am is used to name things, places, animals and human beings.
The examples of each class below will make it clear to you.
Contoh-contoh (Examples)
Benda (Things) - buku (book), pensel (pencil), kerusi (chair)
Tempat (Places ) - masjid(mosque), gereja (church), sungai (river)
Haiwan (Animals) - badak (rhinoceros), beruang (bear), kucing (cat)
Manusia (Man) - askar (soldier), jururawat (nurse), posmen( postman)
Kata Nama Khas is also used to name things, places, animals and human beings.
The only difference is that the first letter of each word is capitalised.

Benda (Things) - Parker (name of pen), Proton Saga (name of car)
Tempat (Places ) - Kuala Lumpur, Muzium Negara (National Museum)
Haiwan (Animals) - Sang Belang (leopard), Si Putih (name of cat or dog)
Manusia (Man) - Perdana Menteri (Prime Minister), John, Ahmad
