This may be the best book I've ever read! From the opening sentence: "The small boys came early to the hanging," I was riveted by the story. Building a cathedral in Medieval England may not sound like it would make a good yarn, but trust me on this one. Everyone I've ever talked to who has read the book agrees with me! It's long, but you won't notice. Make sure you have plenty of time before you start it, because you'll be reading far into the night. |

Another
winner! This is the only book I ever finished and immediately opened to page one and
read through again. Set in Victorian England, it's a love story and a psychological
mystery, and it's wonderful. Fowles is one of the few male writers who admits he
doesn't have a clue about women or their motives (at least in this book), and the story is
infinitely better because of that admission. P.S. If you've seen the movie, you still don't have a clue about the book. |

I just didn't "get" it! While I certainly have no fear of complicated books or stories, this one teeters right over the edge into obscurity. There seem to be so very many points that in the end, there are none. I couldn't find one character that I liked. I could never figure out who was who, or when (or even what) events took place. I felt battered by the time I finished, and I had long since quit caring what happened to anyone. I even bought the hardback; what a rip-off! |
