Music Ideas

[From: Rosemary Gately, Saratoga Springs Coordinator]

I just added a link at the bottom of
http://www.walkforcapitalism.org/saratogasprings
to a midi file for John Philip Sousa's "Liberty Bell March" which I thought
might be an appropriate choice for an award ceremony for D2.

[PRODOS: It's under the heading "Additional Links"]

Regarding Rosemary Gately's suggestion of
using the "Liberty Bell March" tune for D2

Thanks to Ulf for pointing this out.

There is no suggestion that this tune be used across-the-board
by all cities.

I leave it to the discretion of each coordinator to choose
any music they might wish to use for their campaign.

If anyone else has suggestions for appropriate music they
are welcome to present them to PLANET. This is not to open
up general discussion on music - as PLANET is not a discussion
list in the usual sense - it is a list for offering, requesting,
and exchanging practical campaign information and ideas.

One of the most useful kinds of post to send to this list
is of the form: "Here is what we are doing in our city!"

We all enjoy and benefit from knowing what others have
accomplished or a planning to do. Agreed?

:-)

"Let's Walk!"

Hi
Sorry, I've just connected to this discusion, but I have the question:
Does anybody remember the song form 70's or beginning of 80's
I do not remember the band and the title but I remember part of words
which are very characteristic:

"Revolution is not solution
it's time to turn to right"

In my opinion, as we are, among other things, for *globalization*, our
music should be global too -- showing a great benefit of capitalism
and technology, the availability of a globe-wide variety of cultures
and entertainment at one's fingertips.

Here in Russia, I am thinking of using Japanese, Finnish, and any
other available music. Not pure folk stuff - it's too non-commercial -
but good commerical music with a local slant, like Japansese 'J-Pop',
of which I am personally very fond.

Perhaps we people could set up an MP3 exchange point for good
commercial stuff from our countries that others could use? It should
be only for coordinators / contact persons to avoid making it a
'pirate site', I think...

[PRODOS: An interesting idea. And thank you for the comments.
If Mikhail would like to help set up such a project, I would
be happy to cooperate.]

Hello. I've just been added to this list. [snip]
[Prodos: Welcome!]

On the subject of music, some North American music I'd recommend is:

- The Oingo Boingo song "Capitalism" and
- The Rush song "Tom Sawyer." Also,
- Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Second Rhapsody.

(I doubt [George Gershwin] was an advocate of capitalism,
but the music itself, to my mind, captures the exuberance
of free markets and the passionate pursuit of wealth.)

[From: Kyle Varner]

I am a big fan of Broadway music.  And, I think *some* Broadway
showtunes would be appropriate for the WalkFORCapitalism.

Here is why:

1)  Broadway represents CAPITALISM.  They don't put on the
musicals because they like us.  They do it to make a profit.
And- the fact that Broadway is one of the "landmarks" of New York
is also symbolic.

2)  We can get songs with Pro-Capitalist themes.  The one musicals
that comes to mind is "1776"- they have songs about the framing of
the constitution.  "We're Planting and Egg "(I think that the name)
is particularly symbolic because just as they planted the seed
of freedom with the Declaration of Independence, we are planting
another seed of freedom with this walk.

I'll look for some other pro-capitalist songs from Broadway and
let you know what they are.

[From: Robert Groezinger]

Not only Gershwin's music captures the exuberance of free
markets but also Disney Corp.'s interpratation of Rhapsody in Blue
in "Fantasia 2000". It's my favorite piece of that film: People finding
their destinies and happiness through venture and "not giving up".

May I also recommend John Mills-Cockell? He's obscure, but
some of his tracks would be utterly perfect. There's infor-
mation to order custom CDs somewhere on starshipaurora.com.
"Music for Rational Romatics" is a great mix: track three
would be a great theme song, if we didn't already have one
:-)

integrety.

And, of course, "New York, New York" [...] as it represents
the willingness to succeed, to take on new challenges, and
acknowledges New York City as the "Capital Of The World."

If anyone wants to use rock and roll for D2, there's a GREAT
song [...] which I'm sure virtually everyone has heard at least
playing in the background somewhere. It's called "All Star"
and it's by a group called Smash Mouth, and it's on their album
Astro Lounge.

[...]

Smash Mouth has a delightfully benevolent sense of life which
should make their music enjoyable by rational fans of rock and
roll.

I seem to dimly recall that "1776" was anything but "procapitalist".  Rather
it was a smear attack on the Founding Fathers.  If I'm wrong on this I
invite correction, but that's my recollection.

There is one great repetitive instrumental tune that would be a good
addition, I think.  It's a Gaelic song played on Irish Fiddle... somber, yet
heroic and charged with powerful passion an energy.  The original version is
called "The Gael" by Dougie Maclean.  Many of you may know it as "The Kiss"
from the Last of the Mohicans soundtrack...   an incredible movie about
love, rational self-interest, patriotism, passion, freedom, with one of the
best 'justice' scenes that Hollywood has ever stumbled across.  For me at
least, this tune encompasses all of that.  [...]

[From: Tym Parsons, Seattle Coordinator]

[...]I have some questions here:

What about copyrights on any music that is played during the Walk?  In the
US at least ASCAP, which is a private outfit that polices royalty
infringement for its artists, is liable to bust you, and you'll get a
significant fine.  So you'll need to clear that with them first.

Ribbons have already been discussed somewhat.  Tying ribbons all over the
place in public spaces could be construed as littering, which also means
risking a fine.  And clearly with private property you'd have to get the
consent of the owner.

[I have also been wondering about this last point i.e. littering. Could anyone on PLANET knowledgeable about legal issues answer this one? Thank you.]
