Meteorites

Meteorites are the oldest material in our solar system and are unchanged in 4 1/2 billion years. Pictured above is a small sample of the meteorite section of the Earth and Space Museum.

We have meteorites from 60 different locations world-wide and over 400 specimens on display, and some of the rarest material on earth. We have iron, stony iron, stone, and pallisite specimens, and 2 different Martian types(this material is very rare). We also have several types attributed to the astroid Vesta.

We have endeavored to display all specimens in the best viewing positions for your viewing pleasure. Info cards for all specimens are displayed with them. We also display a large amount of tektites. Scienctists are still trying to figure out where they are from. The theory is either meteorite impacts on the earth, or from vulcanism on the moon. However, no one knows for sure at this time.

Aside from the info cards, the curator will be able to answer the questions asked by the guests.
