October 1858

Fri 1 -[at home] The threshers have been here today. Lib and I got dinner for 11 men. [They] Had a break down so did not finish. Am sorry now I tell you.

 

Sat 2 - [at home] Baking, moping, churning and the dickens. Don't know what all. Father has gone to the Lodge and I am tired to death, farewell.

 

Sun 3 - no entry

 

Mon 4 - [at home] Lib and I have done a large wash. Brought the water from the spring. Baked bread and pies.

 

Tues 5 - [at home] Have been to the great Brunswick fair. Pretty well done for this town. M... Sherman took first premium for riding. Lib is sick tonight.

 

Wed 6 - [at home] Ironing and baking for those tormented threshers. Oh dear, when will they get through. Fair is at Hinkley today but could not go.

 

Thurs 7 - [at home] Doing housework and sewing some. Lib is learning to spin. Mother [Mary C. Thomas] is not as well today and I have got the toothache. Oh dear.

 

Fri 8 - [at home] Threshers have been here today. Got dinner for 12 men. They have got through thank the Lord.

 

Sat 9 - [at home] Have been doing all kinds of housework. Father has gone to the Lodge and I am tired to death. Good night.

 

Sun 10 - [at home] Lib and I walked to Beebetown to meeting. Went out to Mr. Butts and stayed until the sing. Put came down after us. Had a good time.

 

Mon 11 - [at home] Have been washing. This afternoon Jennie has been here.

 

Tues 12 - [at home] Done housework this forenoon. In the afternoon Jennie, Louisa, Lib and Chub went down to Mr. Butts. Had a surprise party in the evening. 82? - a good house full.

 

Wed 13 - [at home] Jennie, Louisa and I started from Mr. Butts as soon as it was light. Got home at 7 o'clock. Left Lib to sew for Nellie [Butts]. Father has been to mill [to grind the newly threshed wheat ?] and Mother to Uncle [Lucius] Warner's.

 

Thurs 14 - [at home] This forenoon Hattie has been here. After dinner Father, Lib and I went to Strongsville to the fair and almost froze to death.

 

Fri 15 - [at home] This forenoon have been visiting with Rattie [Erastus Prichard] and Dry. This afternoon they have gone to Bill [Freese]'s. Making pants for [brother] Leonard.

 

Sat 16 - [at home] Lots of visitors today. Aunt Polly [Prichard], [her son] Rattie [Erastus Prichard], Aunt Milly [Warner] were here to dinner. This afternoon Rattie has been to the sale. Brought Nellie [Butts] and Sarah up here.

 

Sun 17 - [at home] All hands of us went to Brunswick to meeting in the forenoon. Miles [Tillotson] come home with us. We all went to Beebetown to the sing. Bid Nellie [Butts] good bye there. Lib has gone to York.

 

Mon 18 - [at home] Done a large wash all alone. This afternoon have fixed Lib's skirt. Am tired to death.

 

Tues 19 - [at home] Today Jennie has been here helping me make my waist. Father and Mother have been down to Mr. [D.B.] Stow's to a .... melon eat and I stayed alone until 11 o'clock. Shant let them go again.

 

Wed 20 - [at home] Jennie came up early in the morning to help me sew. Aunt Polly [Prichard] and [her son] Rattie [Erastus] are staying here all night. Dry came over and spent the eve.

 

Thurs 21 - [at Uncle John's] Today Mrs. Raither is buried. After dinner Aunt Polly [Prichard] and Rattie, Put and Chub started for Uncle John [Tillotson ?]'s. Here we are safe and sound.


Jane, her brother, Leonard (Put), her Aunt Polly and cousin, Erastis (Rattie) Pritchard leave Brunswick for Nelson, Portage County, Ohio where Aunt Polly and her family lives. Uncle John apparently lives about halfway between Brunswick and Nelson.


Fri 22 - [at Aunt Polly's] Left Uncle John's for Portage at 9 o'clock. Took dinner at Streetsborough. Got to Aunt Polly [Prichard]'s at 8 o'clock. Found them all well.

 

Sat 23 - [at Aunt Polly's] Rattie [Erastus Prichard], [brother] Leonard and Chub went up to see Hattie in the morning. Found them all well and Hattie the same old sixpence. Had a tip top good visit.

 

Sun 24 - [at Aunt Polly's] George [Prichard], [his wife] Emily, Rattie [Erastus Prichard] and Chub went up to Nelson to meeting in the morning. Then went to Garrettsville to attend the funeral of a young man.

 

Mon 25 - [at Mr. Thornton's] Stayed to Aunt Polly [Prichard]'s in the forenoon. Almost dead with the toothache. In the afternoon Rattie [Erastus Prichard] and Chub went down to Mr. Tilden's. Am staying to Mr. Thornton's tonight.

 

Tues 26 - [at Aunt Polly's] Spent the forenoon with Mrs. Allen. In the afternoon to Mr. Horton's with John [Prichard] and his wife [Eliza Jane Linzee], George [Prichard] and wife [Emily Bosworth]. Mrs. Tilden, Mr. and Mrs. Allen, Rattie and Chub and Put. That is all.


Eliza Jane Linzee is the sister of Belden Colton Linzee who would become Jane's second husband in 1864. It was undoubtedly on one of these visits to Nelson that Jane met Belden.


Wed 27 - [at Aunt Polly's] Spent the forenoon to John [Prichard]'s. Came back with Rattie to Dudley Brown's a little while. In the eve went to Troy to a surprise party. Had a good time.

 

Thurs 28 - [at Aunt Polly's] Did not get up until 8 o'clock. In the afternoon George [Prichard] and [his wife] Em[ily Bosworth], Put and Chub went up to Hatties. Had roast pig for supper. Am staying to Aunt Polly [Prichard]'s.

 

Fri 29 - [at Aunt Polly's] Called on Maryette ... in the forenoon. In the afternoon b[Erastus Prichard] and I went up to see Hattie ...... Rained like fun coming home. (Wish I was at home)

 

Sat 30 - [at Uncle John's] Well here I am to Uncle John's. Had to ride home in the rain as usual. Left Aunt Polly [Prichard]'s at 8 o'clock and arrived safe to Uncle's at 6 o'clock.

 

Sun 31 - [at home] Went to meeting with Uncle [John] and Aunt[Adeline]. Got back and found Carl and Lib there. Started for home at 1 o'clock. Found Leonard and May well, and in good spirits.
