Critique I

Photograms

This critique involved creating images with the enlargers, photographic paper, and whatever we happened to have in our pockets. Ideally, we were supposed to have learned important compositional techniques during this process.

-Man Ray

Personally, I thought the whole project was kind of annoying. The professor claimed that it was usually an "advanced" technique that first year photography students didn't usually attempt. I felt that photograms had more to do with painting than photography. It just didn't offer the same possibilities that occurs with actual negatives.

I had some experience with these techniques in elementary school. We would put objects on light-sensitive paper, and expose it to light. Since this was the first critique of the semester, and none of us at the time knew anything about the class, or our dear professor, I wasn't sure what exactly we were supposed to be getting out of it. I think Chad just didn't want to trust us with the enlargers until we knew a bit more about the class.
